DIY Pong - The Ball

The ball is the tricky part.

I just thought that I would reserve this spot for keeping three blogs in three days in a row.
I have been thinking about how to do the ball but have not had the time to test this out in hardware.
I am planning to use the same monostable multivibrator approach but we need to modulate the pulse duration, i.e. modulate the RC value of the monostable.

I have two ideas.

1. Use a FET (field effect transistor) in place of the resistor.
2. Use an LDR (light dependent resistor) and modulate the value of the resistance with an LED.

If you have other suggestions I will be happy to hear about them.
We will have to wait and see the final solution.
